Which format should I choose for the web?

WebP is the safest modern default: broad support and much smaller than JPG or PNG. AVIF is smaller still where it is supported.

Why is AVIF sometimes missing from the list?

The tool tests whether your browser can actually encode AVIF and hides the option when it cannot, rather than producing a broken file.

Does converting to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG is lossless but it cannot restore detail that a previous lossy compression already removed.
